Coach Jack Hartman

Hartman - how old school can you get? The description I've copied from the media guide (below right) is right on target. Completely closed in public - never an extra word.

In 17 seasons at KSU he'd go 295-169, our winningest coach. Yet, big-time success would elude him. Three B8 titles and one tournament championship. No final fours, but four times his team would loose in the regional finals.

For a few years he lived around the block behind my house. No one dared approach him. Once he was driving home and I was riding my bike past his driveway just as he wanted to turn in. We sort of stuttered back and forth and I was the recipient of the famous, patented, "Hartman glare." Right through the windshield it could blow your hair back.

But I also have the story of a high school friend who went into coaching and would seek Hartman out for advice. He said Jack was generous with his time and that those conversations with Jack were amazing and invaluable to him.
