Milwaukee Hotel Window

Brave birds raise their voice
in competition with the diesel
and the song of rubber on asphalt.

Instinct’s necessity is heard,
in human reference,
as unbearable agony.

Human voice raised
to sing of family love
just visions
and marvels unbuilt,

bravely counterpoint
poverty’s scream
necessity's grind
and wealth’s siren call,

but ring unheard
in ears protected
by faith
in the present order.

Trills and cheeps
crack the asphalt
and the diesel sings of life.
