Madagascar, an island about the size of Texas (580,000 sq. km.), became independent (from the French) in 1960. The 1995 population was estimated at 14.8 million. The official languages are Malagasy and French. Major religions are traditional religions, Christianity and Islam. Government is in the hands of an elected president and National Assembly.
