Imperial Hubris: Why the West is Losing the War on Terror Here is an amazing, revolutionary idea: Let's listen to Bin Lauden and observe his actions and then formulate a response that actually addresses what Al Quaeda is actually doing. It goes without saying, of course, that little of American's strategy against Al Quaeda bares any resemblance to that. But this CIA analyst provides a trenchant diatribe on the many disasters we are creating because we fail to do this. This author is certainly gung ho about achieving military victory by application of massive force, so I tend to think he doesn't take his own advice seriously enough. However, this book provides much detail. One valuable service he does is to argue that Bin Lauden is not a nut case, but a skilled leader doing exactly what he intends and we should not dismiss him as an idiot. Especially since he's doing pretty well in the war on terror so far. |
